Cameras are
everywhere, but can you imagine a vitamin-sized video
camera traveling
painlessly and naturally through the human digestive system? Believe
it or not, this is happening, right here at Endoscopic Microsurgery
Associates, P.A. in Baltimore. Dr. Mark D. Noar is now offering this
innovative technology – the Given Imaging M2A™ Capsule Endoscope –
which is revolutionizing diagnoses of the small intestine.
Approximately 70
million Americans suffer from gastrointestinal diseases and disorders,
many of which are rooted in the small intestine and therefore can be
very difficult to diagnose. Through the use of the Given Diagnostic
Imaging System’s M2A Capsule Endoscope, which is a miniature
disposable video camera in a pill, we are now able to provide our
patients with a non-invasive means of diagnosing disorders such as
obscure bleeding, Crohn's disease, malabsorption (Celiac disease), and
intestinal tumors.
The Given system
has many benefits, offering a new level of comfort and convenience for
patients and physicians alike. With the use of other diagnostic
procedures, pinpointing the cause of small intestine disorders was not
only invasive, but also inconvenient, often requiring anesthesia and
extended office visits.
The process is
simple: The patient simply swallows the capsule with a sip of water.
The capsule captures color video images as it travels naturally
through the digestive system, and transmits these images to a small
recorder unit, located on a belt worn by the patient. During the
“examination” the patient is free to continue with normal daily
activities. After 8 hours the patient returns the recorder to the
physician’s office where the data is downloaded and analyzed by the
doctor.
We are excited to
be able to bring the M2A Capsule Endoscopy procedure to Baltimore. I
hope you are interested in learning more about this revolutionary
technology and how it will benefit the lives of many in our area and
beyond. - Mark D. Noar, M.D.
